VISUAL ART: Images of Diginity Art Exhibit (Karpeles Museum)

Last Friday (9/3/10), over 50 art lovers attended the reception for the Jacksonville Consortium of African American Artists (JCAAA) annual Images of Diginity art exhibit at the Karpeles Manuscript Museum (historic Springfield). The exhibit features an impressive collection of artwork and runs through September 29, 2010. Below are a few images of artwork from the exhibit.

Avery Sunshine: A native of Chester, PA and a graduate of Spellman College, her vocals can be heard on the FIGHTING TEMPTATIONS soundtrack. She has opened for several national artists including Rachelle Ferrell. She was the lead keyboardist for TYLER PERRY’s stage play “Meet The Browns and was the choral director for the theatre production of DREAMGIRLS during the National Black Arts Festival in Atlanta. She performed daily at the Democratic National COnvention (Denver, CO) and several private events at the 2009 Inauguration of Preside Barack Obama. http://www.averysunshine.com

Akia Uwanda: A native of Jacksonville, AKIA UWANDA is a award winning model, played local African American slave icon, Anna Kingsley in the production “Maijeen” and sings soul and jazz at various venues with EvenStill and Akia Uwanda/Bridgwater Project. http://twitter.com/akiauwanda

Celestial: A talented songwriter and vocalist, Celestial released her debut album, Changed and had performed at Poppy Love Smoke (Jacksonville), AKA Lounge (Orlando) and various festivals in the southeast Florida. http://www.parriscope.net

Elisha Parris and AJAZE: Elisha Parris songs have been recorded by nationally recognized artists like Grammy-nominated gospel singer/producer, Troy Sneed (EMtro) and Bruce Allen(Meridian Group). Elisha has served as Music Director for the Stellar Award winning inspirational jazz duo, Allen & Allen. He has also recieved the NCP Musican of the Year Award and garnered two JPF Award nominations (Song of the Year – Gospel Category and Album of the Year-Gospel Category).

His band AJAZE is one of the premier jazz and soul bands in northeast Florida. They have performed at various jazz festivals in Florida and perform to standing room only crowds at venues such as Poppy Love Smoke, AJ’s on Park Street, Crab Cake Factory and Cuba Libre.
